THREE P'S FOR PLANTING

February 28, 2017

As we prepare for another planting season there are three “Ps” you need to remember to get the best yields from your seed.  Placement. Population. Patience.

Placement

Not all corn hybrids are created equal. This is why it is essential to place the right seed on the right acre. In the seed industry, we often thrive on the “plot winners,” moving most of our growers to a few select hybrids. These hybrids provide a logical sale to a grower, “why wouldn’t you want the highest yielding number in the county?” This simplistic approach to hybrid selection does not take into account your unique farm characteristics or the financial impact across your operation. The FS System offers multiple seed brands that provide multiple seed varieties. Our extensive testing of these varieties on multiple soil profiles allows your FS Crop Specialist to select and place the right varieties on your farm.

Population

In today’s economic environment it may seem like a good idea to lower populations and save on your total seed cost. It is imperative to plant the optimum population for the best return on your seed investment. Depending on the corn hybrid and the soil into which it is being planted, you may need to use a higher population than what is standard for your operation. Your FS Crop Specialist will be able to recommend the optimum population based on what hybrid is being planted and where it is being placed.

Patience

The most difficult of all management practices is patience. As the weather turns to something that looks more like spring than winter, and neighbors get in the field, it is important to remember the risks that come with planting too early. Early frost, cold and wet soils, and crop insurance dates are all things to consider before loading the planter. Patience is also important in executing seed placement and populations by farm. In the heat of planting, it is easy to grab the pallet or box that is in the front of the shed. Remember to plan for the right seed on the right field.
